L word Spin off

As the final season of The L Word began filming, Showtime announced there is an L Word Spin off in development by creator Ilene Chaiken.

The new show will follow one of the series' current characters, and its storyline will most likely be introduced during the series' final season, with the finale leaving the door open for the Spin off There is no title yet.

L-word.com sources says the show will first be aired only online. It is not certain that it will air on television. Showtime President Robert Greenblatt wouldn't say which character would be spun off, though he added that the actress in question doesn't even know about the possible series yet.

Sources speculated who the possible Spin off might be centered around. This is what we received:

-- Alice. Not likely. Leisha Hailey is focusing on her music.
-- Tina. Not likely. Laurel is working on a development deal with Fox.
-- Bette. Not likely. She wants some time off.

It is, likely, Jenny, Max, Shane, Jodi, Kit, Tasha, Helena.

Given the complete disdain of Jenny by the audiences, we hope it is not centered around Jenny. Without the more likeable characters, we don't see this as being a viable project. (See our poll at www.l-word.com/index.php).

Max is also a pretty disliked character.

Kit, while people have liked her, doesn't seem to have that much of a following. However, Kit has been a bit separate from the rest. Perhaps her music career jumps to a new level, taking her away from the group and on the road?

Tasha seems aimless now that she's out of the military. Also, there was a comment that the Spin off would be focused around one of the "Argentina" cast. Therefore, we think it's not likely it's Tasha.

Jodi, played by Marlee Matlin, is also not likely. Jodi was also not a very liked character, given her role between Bette and Tina. The character did not seem to stand out on her own, separate from that storyline. Also, Matlin is such a major name that it's likely she'll not continue with a Spin off

That leaves Shane and Helena. We think -- or maybe hope -- the Spin off will focus around one of them.

Would Shane leave LA? Not likely, but again, she's aimless. Perhaps she goes on the road? Perhaps she's going to meet the love of her life (or RE-meet?) and will settle down? As one of the most liked characters of the show, we think a Spin off focused around Shane would stand a chance of success.

Helena. It's very possible that the Spin off would focus on the rich, jet setting Helena, played by Rachel Shelley. A very liked character, her story would lend itself easily to explaining that she is now separate from the rest, explaining their absence.

So, there you have it. In part, it's exciting. In part, it's not much to get excited about -- we don't know who it is, and it will only be shown online, not necessarily on Showtime itself.

Time will tell, and we'll keep you posted!

In the meantime, GO VOTE for who you want it to be, and talk about it with your friends here on L-word.com.

Comments: i don't mind Shane spin-off but i don't want to see her have different girl in each episode, because it will be all the same...Helena, on the other hand, might provide more substantial drama...if we can't have TiBette, i would love to see Helena show

Comments: In the meantime, GO VOTE for who you want it to be, and talk about it with your friends here on L-word.com.I don't mean to be picky but this comment is an error. The poll on the home page is not who we WANT to see but who we THINK the character will be in the spinoff. That's a big difference. The poll is not who is the most popular character but who we think Ilene and Showtime feels would be the character who would make a go of it on the internet. Anyway, I never thought it would be Jennifer or Laurel because I don't think Showtime would have broken up Tibette and I don't see this as a great career move on either woman's part: acting on the internet. They've both had very productive careers making films and I don't think either woman would have opted for this route no the internet. But, that's just my opinion. And, if we are not going to have a Tibette spin off, then the next best thing is to hear positive news about Laurel or Jennifer in their next career moves. And, this bit of news about Laurel being in a development deal with Fox TV is a bit of very good news for us, her fans. And, I'm just very happy to hear this and I'm very happy for Laurel.

Comments: i agree. if we cant have a bette and tina spin off, then helena is the one i would settle with. although she has been a main character at some point, we havent really seen that much of her, she's still a fairly fresh character and she has come to be liked by l word fans. she might be the best shot, as we dont know much of her, whereas we have all seen A LOT of jenny's or shane's drama already. finger's crossed!

Comments: I'd like to maybe see a Jenny spinoff. Like if she leaves LA, starts a new life somewhere, maybe she'll get on her feet. I know there are a lot of Jenny haters and that's okay. It's their choice. Helena? I'm sure she could pull off a nice comedy/drama series. I mean, the woman was hilarious when she was in prison.

Comments: We've started a Tibette Spin-Off campaign. If you want to join in on the postcard mail-in campaign, go to tibette.com (I'm known as lovethelword over there). It's on the first page and download the postcard. The addresses are there as well, to both east and west coast Showtime offices and Ilene in Vancouver. Send out as many times as you want. There's also a poll where you can vote for who you want to see in the spin-off.

Comments: I agree that it won't be TiBette. The L-Word is centered around them so they wouldn't need to spinoff. Also, I agree that if a new show was going to center around them it would be airing on showtime, not online. Thirdly, they said actress, singular. I wish it was Bette and Tina but it won't be.So who could it be. Alice seems out of the question because of Uh Huh Her. It seems she wants to focus on her music. Based on what I've heard from the songs released so far, I can understand why. I love their sound. I guess if she had the right offer she might be able to balance both but it doesn't seem like the direction she's going.Jenny doesn't seem likely in that she hasn't been a fan fave. Mia Kirshner is amazing but Jenny was taken in directions that left a lot of people either annoyed or scratching their heads. Perhaps they could take her character in a more centered direction in season and make it more plausible but it doesn't seem like her now.Shane and Helena seem like the safest bets. The audience roots for Shane to work out her problems. I'd watch Shane. I'd get frustrated if it ended up being episode after episode of one night stands. But there is definitely lots of character development available there.Helena is another great possibility. Rachel Shelley is a great actress and Ilene Chaiken has admitted to underwriting / poor writing for her character. She was quoted as having her leave season five for awhile so they could revamp her and bring her back in the manner she deserved. With the way they set up her character; the money, the family background etc.. it would be easy to see how she might leave West Hollywood for some new opportunity and bring in a new circle of friends. There are a ton of possibilities with her character and with that actress. It will be interesting.
