I know I’m not the only one who miss The L Word, especially
now when the show is over. I still get Google alerts, informing
me when The L Word or any of the cast members’ names are mentioned
on the Internet. Sometimes even the tiniest bit of information is
enough to keep fans talking about it for days on the threads of
many TLW-related boards.
My favorite bits of information are Angela Robinson’s twitters
about eating Fig Newtons or having lunch with Laurel Holloman in
Malibu. Laurel sort of disappeared from everyone’s radar after
she attended the Farewell party in Los Angeles early in March and
her fans are eager to learn anything even remotely new about her
life and career.
We know that Angela Robinson, who was a writer and a director on
The L Word, is working on a few movies and shows. I hope that her
meetings with Laurel are not just about two friends hanging out
together but maybe about two people discussing a possibility of
working together.
Jennifer Beals had been more visible in the public eye after the
show ended. She attended the GLAAD Awards in Los Angeles and TimeTalks
in New York (you can find my reports about both events posted in
the news section). The latest that we’ve
heard about Jennifer was her participation in the fundraiser for
the DOXA Documentary
Film Festival in Vancouver.
This is another good reason that I like to check out my Google
alerts because I always learn something new. I’ve never heard
about the DOXA Festival before and it turned out to be a very extraordinary
venture. Here’s some information about the Festival that you
might find interesting, as well.
DOXA in Greek means “opinion”. This name for the Festival
was chosen to “acknowledge that public opinion is an important
component of community and to encourage dialogue on issues occurring
locally and globally.”
The DOXA Festival is run by the Documentary Media Society that
was established in response to the rapidly increasing public interest
in documentary and independent films. This annual Festival offers
public screenings, workshops, panel discussions and forums, and
master classes. DOXA mission statement outlines its cultural values
that include diversity of culture, age, class and sexuality.
The first DOXA Festival was held in 2000 and has now grown from
a 6-day festival to a 10-day festival and in May of 2009, record
numbers viewed over 70 remarkable documentaries from Canada and
around the world.
The most important thing about the Festival is that it celebrates
documentary as an art form and keeps the audience invigorated, informed,
entertained and challenged by the festival programming.
Like the United States and other countries around the world, Canada
has also been affected by the economic crisis and the art sector
has seen a decrease in funding and sponsorships. That’s why
the DOXA organizers are running Exposed! DOXA’s Celebrity
Camera Auction.
Several celebrities, mostly Canadians, have offered to raise money
for the Festival by using disposable cameras to shoot whatever their
hearts desired. The cameras were then put on e-bay for the highest
bidder to “own a unique set of undeveloped snapshots, exposing
the remarkable lives and extraordinary visions of some of today’s
most celebrated public figures.”
Jennifer Beals was one of those celebrity figures that participated
in the auction and not surprisingly, her camera attracted the most
attention. Jennifer took those photos on the set of her latest movie,
the Book of Eli.
Each celebrity provided a note with their cameras and here’s
what Jennifer’s note said: “Helloooooooo!!! These photos
were taken between March 9 and March 12 in New Mexico while I was
working on a film called The Book of Eli. The film stars Denzel
Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson, Tom Waits. Enjoy.
Best, Jennifer. P.S. If you could find it in your heart to make
duplicates for me I would appreciate it. ?”

Out of curiosity, I was watching the bidding war that was going
on, especially in the last few minutes and my jaw dropped when I
saw the last bid going up to $17,100! I hope the photos will turn
out good.
If any publisher out there needs any proof that Jennifer’s
unique photos from the set of The L Word are worth publishing, they
should really take a good look at the final bid for the un-seen
photos of unknown quality, taken by the single-use camera. If some
un-seen images generates so much interest and money, I can only
imagine what a book of well-known photographs would bring.
I really hope that someone in the publishing world will take a
notice of this auction and soon we will see Jennifer Beals’
photography book being published. If you remember my GLAAD interview
with her, Jennifer is really interested in publishing her book and
going on a book tour so she can raise money for her beloved charities.
By the way, bidding on the first batch of cameras, including such
celebrities as Martin Sheen, Michael Hogan (who played Dana’s
father on The L Word) and Tegan Quin (whose music was featured on
The L Word), ended on Monday, June 1. More cameras are being added
daily and are open for bidding for 10 days, so if any of you are
interested in other disposable cameras, check
it out here.
