 Episode Summary

by Pam Cole

No bouncy Betty opening credits. Instead, a tasteful quiet piano accompanies some nice flashback scenes of Dana.

The episode opens at Dana's funeral. She has been cremated and her parents want to put her ashes in a mausoleum, even though Dana wanted her ashes scattered in a waterfall at the summer camp where she first had sex with a girl. Everyone is very sad and dressed in black. The gang has been relegated to a bench in the back of the church. During the very traditional Christian service, the preacher refers to Dana as someone who never met her (heterosexual) love partner and Alice stands up and yells out that Dana was gay. She then leaves the service.

Afterwards, the gang is not invited to Dana's parent's house for the wake. Alice steals Dana's ashes and the gang plans to have their own memorial the way Dana wanted it.

Bette and Tina ignore each other. Don't know how they got like this, but Henry and Mikey come to Bette and Tina's house after the funeral to go on a "cheering up" trip to the aquarium. It's weird and awkward with Bette there. Mikey asks Bette to take a "family photo" of Henry, Tina, and the two kids and she sadly does.

Max interviews again at Intechmode for the job he didn't get as Moira. Max looks more like a man every episode now. As a man with the same experience and resume, Intechmode offers him a better job with a six-figure salary, and Max excitedly accepts it. Jenny is upset that Max didn't reveal to them that he used to be Moira. She wanted to write a story for the New Yorker magazine about the hypocrisy of it all.

Dylan packs up her stuff and leaves town. She stops by Helena's house and drops off her film footage, and a video for Helena. She also tore up the settlement check and returned it. In the video, she apologizes and tries to explain why she did it, but Helena mutes the video and doesn't listen.

Shane is so upset about Dana that she asks Carmen to marry her. She just blurts it out while Carmen is working in the garden. Then the scene cuts and we don't know how Carmen responds. Damn!

Bette visits Joyce Wyshnia, the lawyer that Tina used when she was divorcing Bette last season. Bette wants to get sole custody of Angelica, because she feels that Angelica will be treated like an outsider in Henry and Tina's family. Angelica looks more like Bette's child and Bette knows what it is like to be a mix-raced child. When Bette goes home, she sees Henry and Tina kissing through the window, so she leaves and goes to Kit's house. She talks to Kit about how lonely she is and spends the night with Kit. Angus is very sweet.

The next day, the gang all go up to Camp Imalahkaha where it is cold and snowy. It is a long hike to the waterfall and the gang share some lovely memories about Dana on the way. We get to see some flashbacks of Dana that we have never seen before. (This is a proper memorial, for the gang and the audience.) When they get to the falls, they take turns scattering Dana's ashes into the river. Shane has an angry outburst about how everything isn't all right and Dana died alone. Everyone cries. Bette and Tina ignore each other, even on this touching and sad occasion. As Alice turns to go, she sees an apparition of Dana in the waterfalls.

As Shane sobs at the falls, Carmen says "Yes," agreeing to marry Shane. They hug and turn to leave with the others. Then Shane also sees Dana's apparition in the water.

When Alice goes home, Lara is waiting on the doorstep, finally back from Paris. They say nothing but go inside the apartment together. Lara starts to sob and Alice does too. Alice touches her hand and next thing you know, they are kissing.

#311 "Last Dance"

Despite the episode being titled "Last Dance" there are sadly no Donna Summer songs to talk about. The intro to this week's show is done differently with a more somber sound and Dana highlights galore.

Ted Gori - I Went Back Today: At the Planet or wherever as Jenny does her usual self righteous crap at Kevin...er...Max.

Acidica Khoomi - Mantra: Dana Flashback as Alice and Dana first meet.  The conversation ends with a legal threat from Dana.  Yep, love at first sight right there.

Elektro 4 - Rainy Day Picnic: The Millennium Party Flashback and hey look!  It's Harrison!!!  Also great to see Kit in that Season 1 look.  Also, nice in-joke in the glass box with the various messages as one of them is "Ilene is here."  Cute.

Mary McBride - One More Time: Season 1 deleted scene flashback as Dana and Jenny dance around and enjoy themselves.

The Bastard Fairies - The Boy Next Door: Another high quality flashback as Shane and Dana get high after Dana's Season 1 breakup with Lara.

Tegan and Sara - Love Type Thing: Later on in the same Shane/Dana flashback as they go to a Tegan & Sara concert and the T&S duo perform this song.  Dana's waaaay high and it's actually funny.  But yeah, drugs're bad...and stuff.

Ulali - The Good Hearted: Ehhh....they're at the bridge....aaannndddd we keep going...

Jane Siberry - Anytime: The ashes are poured and Jane pretty much has me at hello.  Great image of Dana in the waterfall and a nice sendoff for a character that's deeply missed.

Ulali - Chi Hulla Li: Plays at the end of the episode as...the World is never the same again.

Decent music and I love the use of Jane Sibbery.  Meanwhile, I'm having to pick my jaw up off the floor after seeing Alice and Lara.  Next week, it's the Season 3 Finale and God only knows what we're gonna get now.  But I'm gonna watch, most certainly.
