SHO: Kit preps The Planet for its grand reopening while Jenny meets her new
roommate Shane's love interest. Bette's emotional tailspin continues.
Yahoo TV: Jenny moves in with Shane; Dana questions Tonya's motives; Tina
discovers an e-mail from Candace.
TV Guide: Rejected from Charlotte Birch's writing class, Jenny is determined
to win over the intimidating professor; Bette has a car accident; Dana and
Alice continue to hide their attraction from their friends; and Kit struggles
to find an opening act for the club.
The opening scene shows Alice typing on her laptop in a jungle environment.
As she is reading the wording on her screen we see a hand grab her shoulder.
It’s Tonya and it seems as if she knows about Alice’s feelings
toward Dana and she’s not too happy. Tonya sits down and tells Alice
that if she wants to play then she has to play with Tonya too. Alice starts
to undo Tonya’s string on her shirt cringing, then Tonya grabs her face
and kisses her hard. Alice breaks apart and asks about Dana, to which Tonya
points down and tells her that someone is hungry. Dana spreads Alice’s
legs apart and starts moving in, then it cuts to Alice in bed and it is realized
that she was having a nightmare.
Bette and Tina are in a room together with both of their lawyers discussing
the separation. Bette’s lawyer throws out a great offer to Tina but
her lawyer doesn’t want to accept it because it’s more of a short
term offer. Tina’s lawyer says that they want to talk about a final
separation to which Bette looks shocked. As the lawyer’s are talking
Bette goes over to Tina and kneels down in front of her. Bette tells her that
they can fix everything and that she doesn’t want their relationship
destroyed. Tina’s lawyer interrupts and tells Bette that she was the
one that ruined the relationship and asks Tina what she wants. Tina says that
she wants things to be different, to which Bette tells her that it will be.
Tina’s lawyer tells them that they should reschedule their meeting when
people are being less dramatic, and Bette and her lawyer leave.
It cuts to Bette driving looking very distracted and upset about the meeting.
Tina is talking to her lawyer, and she begins to get angry. Her lawyer tells
her that anger is a good thing, and asks her what she needs. Tina tells her
that she needs her own life, and that she has been living off a friends couch
for the past month. Her lawyer tells her that she can stay in her guest house,
to which Tina declines at first but then winds up accepting the offer later
on. We cut back to Bette driving who runs a red light and crashes into another
car. The driver gets out of his car screaming and ranting. Bette gets out
of her car and screams at him to calm down and she has somewhat of a breakdown.
Kit is walking around the Planet which is being remodeled and turned into
a nightclub. Alice and Shane walk in and are impressed by how much everything
has changed. Kit tells them that she hired a Jazz quartet for the opening
night to which Alice and Shane voice their concern. Kit realizes that people
in the community might not like that kind of music and Alice offers to try
and find someone else like Pink. Shane tells Kit that she knows a really great
DJ, and Kit tells her that she wants to use her.
Jenny goes to her writing teacher to get advice on her story that she wrote.
Her teacher tells her that the class is full and that she can apply again
next semester, but Jenny doesn’t leave. Jenny asks her why she didn’t
get into the class and the professor tells her that even though she changes
the people and the situations in her stories is all autobiographical, and
she wants fiction writers.
Alice is helping Tina move into her lawyer’s guest house. Alice tells
Tina that she could have stayed with her as long as she wanted but Tina tells
her that she has already stayed long enough. When they see the guest house
they are very impressed by it.
Bette goes to the Planet to give Kit a letter that was sent to her house
by mistake. As Bette is walking away Kit asks her if she is ok, to which she
says that she has been better. Kit starts telling her that she is having problems
too and doesn’t know if they will be able to have the Planet opened
in time. Bette interrupts Kit and tells her that Tina is divorcing her and
that she got into an car accident earlier.
Jenny and Shane have moved in together. Jenny walks into the kitchen and
finds Carmen in her underwear and a tank top looking through the refrigerator.
Carmen introduces herself and then apologizes for being out there in her “super
lover” costume and goes back into Shane’s room. Shane is getting
dressed to go out. Carmen tells her that she wants her to stay and play a
game. The rules of the game are that they can kiss but they can’t touch
each other and whoever loses has to let the other person do whatever they
want to them. Shane winds up touching Carmen to which Carmen pushes her down
on the bed and has her way with her. It cuts to them lying in bed together
and Carmen starts asking Shane a bunch of questions about herself. Shane doesn’t
answer any of them and gets up and starts dressing to go out.
We see Tonya sitting at a table with a group of people discussing how she
met Dana. Dana walks in and is somewhat shocked to see the people there. Tonya
introduces all of the individuals and we find out that they are all going
to sponsor their wedding. Tonya starts pitching her plans for the first “Corporately
sponsored lesbian wedding” and all the investors are very pleased with
her ideas.
Bette is in a meeting with her colleagues talking about how Peggy Peabody
is stepping down and her daughter Helena is taking her place. Her boss refers
to Helena as one of Bette’s “people” to which she is confused.
He tells her that she is a lesbian also and she seems somewhat offended by
what he has said. James walks up behind Bette and tells her that the man that
she got in an accident with is on the phone. She picks it up and she tells
him sternly that they need to get an estimate on the damages of the car. She
then gets into a small argument with the man and Bette’s coworkers looked
shocked because of her recent behavior.
Dana’s business manager tells her that he is going to cut a check for
Tonya from the corporate account. Dana is confused, and he tells her that
she is getting paid a managers fee. Tonya walks up behind Dana and tells her
that she has to leave to go pitch her ideas to another sponsor that couldn’t
attend. Dana looks at Tonya upset and asks her why she is getting paid a managers
fee. Tonya tells her that she is good at it and if Dana wants they can get
someone else to do it. Dana gives in and tells her that it’s ok for
Tonya to be her manager also.
Alice is cleaning her apartment when she hears her buzzer go off. She runs
over to it and Dana is downstairs and she needs to talk about Tonya taking
her money. Alice’s tells her to come on up, but Dana tells her that
she can’t because of the rules. Alice tells her that they will work
something out. Dana stands outside of Alice’s apartment and they begin
to talk about Tonya. Alice tells Dana that Tonya has her brainwashed and Dana
agrees that she does. There is an awkward silence and then Dana tells Alice
that she looks good. They begin to flirt with each other. As they are talking
they both look inside Alice’s apartment and spot her bed. They look
back at each other and Dana gives Alice a look to show her what she wants
to do. Alice picks up on it and changes the subject. Alice tells Dana that
she is going to get back to cleaning and Dana leaves.
Jenny talks to her professor while she is walking to her car. Jenny tells
her that she has rewritten her submission but her professor tells her that
the class is already full. Jenny tells her that the story means a lot to her
and that her teacher has already made her a better writer. Jenny places the
story on the professors car and walks away.
The gang goes over to Shane’s new place and they are all sitting around
having drinks. Alice is on the phone talking to Kit apologizing that she couldn’t
get Pink to play at the Planet. Jenny walks in and Shane tells her that they
can leave if she wants. Jenny tells them that it ok if she stays and Alice
tells her to sit next to her. Alice starts to flirt with Jenny and it is somewhat
noticeable that Dana is jealous. Bette walks into the house with a drink in
her hand and tells them all that she invited herself. Shane grabs her a chair
and the atmosphere of the room gets very awkward and silent. Tonya tries to
break the ice by asking a question that everyone has to answer. They go around
the room and when it’s Dana’s turn Alice seems to snap at her
and vice versa. Tonya notices the tension and asks them what is going on between
them, and Dana changes the subject quickly.
Shane and Alice take a very intoxicated Bette home and get her into bed.
Alice lays down behind her and runs her fingers through her hair to calm her.
Shane tells her that she is sorry and kisses her on the cheek. Bette closes
her eyes and Alice says that she is sorry too and kisses her on the side of
her forehead. They stay with Bette as she drifts off to sleep.
Jenny is in class waiting for her teacher to come in. When the teacher enters
she hands back Jenny the paper that she submitted. As she turns the page and
looks at the comments a smile appears on her face as she reads “Indeed
better”.
Alice goes over to Tina’s to pick her up to go to the Planet. Tina
tells her that she can’t go because she has too much work to do. Alice
looks upset and tells her that Bette is drinking and smoking herself to death
and that she thinks that Tina is eating her pain away. Tina tells her that
she isn’t getting fatter, she lifts up her shirt and shows Alice her
pregnant stomach. Alice looks shocked and starts to cry and Tina comforts
her and tells her that everything is going to be ok, and that she is going
to raise the baby.
Tina goes over to Bette’s house to pick up some more clothes. She sees
that the bed isn’t made so she begins to make it for her. When she is
finished she looks at Bette’s laptop that is sitting open. She turns
on the screen and finds an email from Candace on it with a picture of them
lying together in bed.
Alice walks into the Planet and spots Shane. Alice tells her that there is
a secret that she wants to tell her, but Shane tells her not to. As they are
talking the band Betty walks into the club and Shane seems impressed that
Alice was able to get someone to play there through the lesbian phone tree.
Alice is walking through the Planet and Tonya spots her and starts dancing
with her. She tells Alice that she knows why she has been upset lately. She
informs her that she knows that Alice wants Dana all to herself. Alice is
really shocked and tells her that’s not true. Tonya tells her that Alice
probably feels like she stole her best friend away and that she will make
sure that they share time with Dana. Alice walks away and tells them that
she has to go to the bathroom. Dana tries to follow her but Tonya grabs her
and begins to kiss her.
Kit introduces the band and they start to play. During their set the lead
singer pulls Shane onstage and starts to kiss her. Carmen sees it and walks
over to Jenny and gives her the beer that she had gotten for Shane. Jenny
and Carmen start talking and Jenny asks her if she wants to leave. Carmen
tells her that she is still working but that she would love to another time.
Carmen leans over and kisses Jenny, and Shane sees them and walks away.
Bette goes home and notices that the bed is made. She walks up to her lap
top and sees that the picture of her and Candace in bed together is on the
screen. She walks over to the closet and notices that all of Tina’s
clothes are missing. Bette walks outside and walks into the pool fully clothed
and submerges herself.

Music (scene by scene breakdown by Kace of What
the L Radio!)
A quick note about the score related stuff for this episode. A big applause
to EZGirl for this week, especially the scene with Alice and Shane helping
Bette back to her home and quite frankly the most human and touching moment
of Season 2 up to this point. Maybe the whole series. Kinda surprised there
was no Three Dog Night this week, given the episode title, but anyway...away
we go!
BETTY "Jungle Jane"
Plays as Tina and Alice check out Tina's new place. Fun, upbeat number that
fits with the scenery as I keep anticipating Tarzan to yell at any moment.
It's like Deepest Darkest Los Angeles where this house is.
Joystick "I Never Knew Your Name"
Slow, sexy song as Shane and Carmen play a nice game with each other on the
bed. The perverted side of me's thinking as Shane loses, "Can I be next?"
But that's just me... The song's perfect for this scene and any intimate session,
so find it and let your imagination go from there.
Schubert "Andante"
At some restaurant where Dana's ambushed with the Corporate Sponsorship Lunch.
If nothing else, Schubert provides nice relaxing background music.
Schubert "Menuetto Allegretto"
Still at the restaurant as the potential sponsors (nice continuity bit, bringing
in the same guy from last year to play the Subaru rep) have departed and Dana
finds out about who's paying for the festivities. By the way, compare Dana's
look here to Dana's look in Let's Do It (Episode 2...er...3...the 2nd one
after the Pilot during Season 1...that one) when she first noticed Lara.
Thompson Twins "Hold Me Now"
Nice to see Alice's Early '80's Pop isn't limited to Toni Basil, eh? Playing
as Alice is cleaning. At least 'til Dana arrives and the music changes to...
Joystick "Good Good Good"
More Joystick fun and I like this song better. Nice beat and overall good
sounding. Alice and Dana meanwhile are just way too cute together as the music
plays on.
Kinnie Starr "Anything"
Kinnie continues to do no wrong as this quaint rocker plays on while Alice
and Kit talk on the phone about Pink probably not showing up at the Planet
tonight. Personally, I think they shoulda went after Kinnie.
The Organ "Basement Band Song"
The sound quickly changes however to this song right out of Kinnie. The Organ
is starting to appeal to me more and more. It's an embrace of that Circa 1988
Alternative Sound I dig so much.
The Organ "Steven Smith"
Upon Bette arriving and changing the mood a bit, we go from one Organ song
to another. I guess their CD's in the home stereo. There are so many subplots
bouncing around at this point, my head's spinning and enjoying every moment
of it. At least 'til Bette breaks everyone's heart. Man, welcome to Rock Bottom,
Ms. Porter.
Stinkmitt "Pinch The Box"
Welcome to The "NEW" Planet. Complete with techno!
Iffy "Super Bad Girl"
Another dance song at the Planet with a full crowd. I love the dance tracks
this week.
Carole Pope track "Love Strikes Hard"
Yep, more dance music at the Planet. BETTY arrives and Shane makes eyes with
the singer, Elizabeth.
Transientworld "Light Bright City"
Playing inside the Planet while Bette and Jenny have a meeting of the minds.
This feels like a really long, overdue conversation. And yes, it's another
song to dance to.
Stinkmitt "Bangin' On My Clit"
Fun song, fun title and at the Planet while Tonya continues to freak Alice
(and me, quite frankly) out. And what the Hell kinda dance is Dana trying???????
I just don't know if I can say the song title out loud without wanting to
chuckle though.
BETTY "It Girl"
BETTY performs this on stage at the Planet. And Shane adds to her legend.
Also on the Season 2 Soundtrack.
Pam Grier & BETTY "Some Kind Of Wonderful"
Just like "It Girl," this song is also on the Season 2 Soundtrack.
Performed on stage at the Planet. This is a Soul Brothers Six cover that's
been performed by everyone from Huey Lewis & The News to Grand Funk Railroad
to the Coastline Band to Joss Stone, among others. Weird thing here as the
song ends before the Closing Credits and thus we have our First Ever Episode
in which there is no music playing during the Closing Credits.

Previews: "Lynch Pin", Episode #204.
SHO: Jenny and Shane search for a new roommate while Kit
becomes attracted to a motivational self-help guru and Bette loses a major
source of arts funding - to Tina.
TVGuide: Cameryn Manheim and Charles S. Dutton guest star
in this strong episode that introduces two new characters. Manheim is deliciously
over-the-top as a tough-talking producer who offers Shane a job as her assistant.
Dutton is equally compelling as a motivational speaker who bonds with Kit.
Eric Lively joins the cast as Mark, Shane and Jenny's voyeuristic new roomie;
and Rachel Shelley begins to play Helena, daughter of philanthropist Peggy
Peabody (Holland Taylor). In the meantime, Bette has a one-night stand; and
Tina's lawyer (Jane Lynch) hits on her.
Yahoo: Bette travels to New York; Shane and Jenny interview
prospective roommates; Kit attends a self-help seminar; Shane draws the attention
of a high-powered producer.
