Looking Back Episode Summary

Tina, Shane, Alice, and Dana are preparing for a trip to Palm Springs for the Dinah Shore weekend. As Bette and Tina make their way into The Planet, Bette tells Tina that she is considering hiring Candace to set up the Provocations exhibit and Tina encourages her to do so. Dana leaves instructions for Mr. Piddles' care to Kit. Tina reveals to Marina that she invited Jenny to join them for the weekend. Alice and her mother celebrate the arrival of Alice's period, signifying that she is not in fact, pregnant and Lenore congratulates Bette for her performance during the debate.

As the ladies' road trip begins, they educate Jenny on the origins of the Dinah Shore weekend and the Human Rights campaign, which is giving Dana an award that weekend. As the ladies' tunelessly sing "Closer to Fine", Lenore bemoans the frequency with which she heard that song during Alice's coming out period, prompting Alice and the girls to tell their "stories".

While in college, Alice's band begins a search for a new bass player and Alice takes a shine to the new female recruit.

Dana tells the story of her summer camp experience at 16 that involved an affair with her tennis instructor "Ralph". When "Ralph" reveals her affections for Dana to a friend, "Ralph's" parents quickly pull her from camp, leaving Dana broken-hearted.

Lenore tells of a girl-on-girl-on girl experience at "the Mansion" in the 70s, while Shane gave away her Sunshine Meal toy and heart to a little girl from down the block.

The girls dump Lenore at her house at the speed of light and continue on their journey. Arriving at their hotel, they are greeted by Tanya, an incredibly enthusiastic guest liaison who is at Dana's beck and call.

Back at the CAC, Bette goes over her plans for the Provocations set-up with Candace who agrees to prepare a bid. When the estimate turns out to be more than Bette anticipated, Candace tells her she can have 2 of the 3 sides of the triangle, "Good", "Fast", and "Cheap". Over dinner, Candace tells of her relationship problems with Yolanda. Bette receives a call from Tina and upon her return, tells Candace it was her girlfriend and Candace admits she didn't know Bette had a girlfriend. As they clean up, the space seems a little close and just slightly uncomfortable for Bette.

The girls continue their fun at the White Party where Jenny regales the crowd with her coming out story and angrily dismisses Marina as a life-wrecker. Jenny's audience encourages her to call Marina and tell her off. When Marina picks up the phone, Jenny chickens out and is rescued by Robin whom Jenny hits it off with.

Following the HRC award reception, Dana is mobbed by her fans but is protected by Tanya who reveals her attraction to Dana when they return to her hotel room. As the two go at it, Dana receives a call on her cell phone from Dana. She quickly dismisses her and gets back to business while Alice expresses her reservations about Tanya to the girls.

A drunken Jenny returns to her room and tells the girls that she has a date later in the week with Robin. She is, however, disheartened by what appears to her to be a pattern of disappointment when it comes to being with women, prompting Shane to convince Tina to tell her coming out story.

Tina's boyfriend Eric, an entertainment lawyer and avid art collector, takes her to an exhibit at the Bette Porter Gallery. Tina is immediately taken with Bette's intelligence, confidence, and beauty. The feeling appears to be mutual. While Tina is admiring a piece of art, Bette rescues one of her earrings which has fallen out and become tangled in her hair. Later that night, Tina discovers that the earring is once again missing and she returns to the CAC the next day to retrieve it. She receives the earring and a kiss from Bette. Jenny, surprised by the revelation that Bette is Tina's first girlfriend, asks Tina if she is curious to be with other women. Tina confides that Bette is her "first, last, and forever".

Candace returns to the CAC to pick up a forgotten bag. She reveals her overwhelming desire to kiss Bette. When Bette doesn't stop her, Candace moves in and they share a passionate kiss before Bette guiltily breaks it off. When Candace leaves, Bette immediately breaks down in tears.

As everyone else sleeps, a smitten Shane places a call to Cherie.

As the girls get ready to leave the following morning, Dana arrives with Tanya and announces that she is coming with them, much to the girls' consternation. The pair share stories on the ride home nauseating everyone else in the car.

Candace arrives at the CAC and pops her head into Bette's office to let her know that she is working in the other room. Bette goes to her desk and stands with her back to the door. She is taken aback by a pair of arms encircling her waist. Mistaking them for Candace's, she whispers, "I'm sorry. I can't", prompting Tina to ask, "You can't what, babe?" Bette quickly recovers by making an excuse about her reservations about having the show ready in time. Tina reassures her that she can do it and tells her that the craziness of the party just made her want to go home and curl up in bed with her.
